Hear from Harper...

This video is an advertisement for ACC, but the story really emphasises the quality of life of Harper has and how the people around her have supported her.

Harper is 12 years old and became a paraplegic at 8 years old. Even though she is in a wheelchair, she is so involved in many different activities and groups.

Use this video to start a chat about the following questions:

  • Did it surprise you to see someone in a wheelchair involved in a kapa haka group?
  • Harper says: "I like being included... We've created a whānau in the group." What can we learn from this?
  • Harper says: "You can't waste your life, you've only got one life and you can do a lot with that time." What can we learn from this?
  • Harper's mum says: "It's taught my children empathy, not just for Harper, but for any different children." What is empathy? What does this mean for us?
  • What does Harper's story teach us about You Have Value?
  • What does Harper's story teach us about We Succeed Together?
  • What does Harper's story teach us about Others Matter?
